Rob Zombie doesn't surprise anyone anymore — and on Lords of Salem, that might be the point.
Rob Zombie has been making the same record in different costumes for years now, and The Lords of Salem is no exception. That isn't an insult. When you build a career on B-movie horror and factory-floor riffs, consistency is a feature.
What works
The production is thick — drum machines, sampled voices, that industrial grind he never fully abandoned after the White Zombie days. "Dead City" and "The Lords of Salem" hit like a midnight radio broadcast from a station that shouldn't exist. If you came for atmosphere, you get atmosphere.
What doesn't
Lyrically, it's the same carnival Zombie has run since the nineties. If you need evolution, look elsewhere. This is comfort food for people who still own the Hellbilly Deluxe cassette.
Verdict
For fans, essential. For everyone else, you've heard this movie before — but the lighting is still good.
