Curator Notes

Drakengard 3 is a prequel, which makes it an awkward closing point and an honest one. It reaches back before the first game rather than forward from the second, so the shelf ends where the story begins. An archive that ordered these three by narrative rather than by release would hide how the series was actually made and received. The filing also marks a generational boundary. This is the only Drakengard released on hardware that shipped with an account system, patches, and a storefront attached. Content that once accompanied the retail copy — the prologue chapter, the alternate voice track, the costume items — was distributed as separate downloads tied to a service rather than pressed onto the disc. What the archive holds is the complete retail object; what the archive cannot hold is everything that was sold alongside it. That gap is the reason this copy is kept rather than treated as the least essential of three. Drakengard 3 documents the moment the series stopped being fully containable in a box, and it belongs in the record precisely because preserving it raises questions the earlier two do not.

Collection Documentation

Acquired in June 2026 alongside the earlier two releases, completing the Drakengard shelf in a single act rather than over years. The retained copy is the North American PlayStation 3 retail edition published by Square Enix (BLUS-31197), not the limited Collector's Edition box. It is complete with its instruction booklet and registration insert, housed in the original Blu-ray keep case. This is the only entry in the lineage held on optical media other than a pressed PlayStation 2 disc, and it sits at the end of the shelf as the newest object and the oldest point in the story. Dedicated artifact views of this copy have not yet been documented; the gallery below is held open for that photography.

Preservation Notes

Access Hardware
Sony PlayStation 3; no later console or handheld plays this disc
Original Hardware
Sony PlayStation 3 · NTSC-U/C
Playback Compatibility
The disc requires original PlayStation 3 hardware. The title was never reissued on a later Sony console, and no backward-compatible successor reads it, so continued access depends entirely on maintaining a working PS3.
Preservation Concerns
Two risks run in parallel. The Blu-ray disc faces ordinary optical aging, while the console it depends on faces hardware failure — optical drive laser fatigue and aging internal storage in particular. Beyond the physical object, the game installs to the console's drive before play, and its downloadable additions were delivered through a storefront rather than pressed onto the disc; that material is not part of this holding and is not recoverable from it.
Edition History
First issued in Japan as Drag-On Dragoon 3 in December 2013. The North American release followed in May 2014, alongside a limited Collector's Edition distributed directly by the publisher. European territories received a digital-only release.
Access Status
The physical North American edition is out of print and circulates through the secondary market. The digital PlayStation 3 edition remains tied to a storefront generation now in decline. No later port or remaster exists; this disc is the archive's only route to the work.
